Real and false breakouts: the dollar index and gold after CPI
Judge whether a breakout is valid using three conditions: the closing level, follow-through flow and the behaviour of the retest.

One week's case study
On 15 October US September CPI was published at 3.7% year on year and 0.6% month on month, both above expectations. The dollar index spiked and gold lost the 4,100 dollar level. The paths then diverged: gold rebounded quickly from 4,130 dollars, and the dollar index gave back most of its gain into the close.
This is a textbook data-driven spike — price crossed a key level but failed to hold it.
Condition one: read the close, not the wick
The first test of a breakout is where the session closes. Trading through a key level intraday but closing back inside is a spike. A close beyond the level is the minimum requirement for a breakout. The longer the wick beyond the level, the less reliable the move.
Condition two: is there follow-through flow?
Genuine breakouts usually come with matching changes in volume and open interest. In forex, two proxies work well: whether front-end government bond yields move in the direction of the break, and whether correlated pairs confirm in the same direction. On 15 October the dollar index spiked and then faded, which shows rate pricing did not extend further in a hawkish direction.
Condition three: the behaviour of the retest
A breakout is normally followed by one retest. If price cannot reclaim the original key level on the retest, the breakout holds. If price returns inside the level quickly, the move lacked absorption and the breakout is false.
What to do with a false breakout
A false breakout is not worthless: it tells you two things — that competition around the key level is intense, and that the market does not read the current driver uniformly. The more robust response is to return to a range framework rather than immediately reversing. Reversing immediately is, in substance, guessing at a direction without a confirmation condition.
Turn the three conditions into a checklist
Fix three items in your plan: did the daily close land beyond the key level, did correlated assets confirm in the same direction, and did the retest hold? Treat it as a breakout only if at least two of the three are met; otherwise treat it as movement inside the range.
